Parkrand

Our second day of bike-touring took us to Parkrand, an apartment building in the garden suburbs of west Amsterdam. one of the many projects we saw that was designed by MVRDV. According to the 1998 urban plan, the building should strengthen the relation between Neighbourhood 9 and the Eendrachts Park. Parkrand consists of a plinth on which stand five towers connected together at the top. The plinth means that the relation between the neighborhood and the park is purely visual as the residents of Neighborhood 9 can see the trees of the park through the towers.

An additional feature is the communal terraces created in the spaces left by the towers. Here, the art budget went towards these oversized lights and planters.
