Crossing the Border

St. Peter's Basilica

Statues on top of the colonnade

On our first day in Rome many of us crossed over the border of Italy and into the micro state of Vatican City. Standing outside we just took in the view, the colonnade surrounding the basilica as well as the basilica itself. On closer inspection, I noticed the sculptures atop the colonnade, each a different saint standing guard over the city. We joined the many people in line to be allowed to enter St. Peter’s Basilica and see sculptures done by famous artists as well as the papal crypt and the dome of St. Peter’s. We walked in and immediately were overwhelmed with the shear number of statues as well as the number of people inside. I had never seen pictures of the inside and it was more than I could have ever imagined.
