Il Bigo

While doing a photography assignment for field studies, I grew an appreciation for one of the major architectural symbols of Genova. Il Bigo is a structure that was built in 1992 by Renzo Piano in celebration of the 500th year anniversary of Christopher Columbo (a native of Genova) discovering America. Inspired by the shipping container cranes of the port, the structure provides a pavillion area and a panoramic elevator which showcases a full 360 degree view of the city. Il Bigo provides a focus area for the entire Porto Antico while creating a more dynamic promenade.
