Museo dell'Opera del Duomo

Adjacent to the Duomo in Florence stands a museum that houses a unique collection of art. The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo houses works that were originally made for the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, for Giotto's Campanile, and for the Baptistery of San Giovanni. Michelangelo's "Pieta del Duomo" can be found in this museum for all to see. Another popular sculpture is Donatello's "Maria Maddalena." The museum also houses the original panels for The Baptistery door and project designs for the facade of the Duomo. The museum was originially a storage area to keep the materials, objects, and tools that were to be taken to the Cathedral. The museum was modernized in between 1998 and 2000. The museum's newly rearranged rooms brings a sense of unity to the artworks from the greatest artists to the most obscure goldsmith all in one building.
