Extended Rooms in Bologna

The University of Bologna is the oldest University in the World. It is also the second largest in Italy. When this university became an attraction to students all over the world, there became a need for more student housing. Bologna is a fairly small city, so all they could do was add to the pre existing buildings. To make more room for the students, buildings were extended outward from the second floor up. If that was not enough room, they were extended even further and more support was needed. (picture 2) Some buildings were extended to the point that columns were required to carry the extra weight. While these buildings were created out of necessity, they create an interesting form of architecture that is unique to Bologna.
