Aldo Rossi's San Cataldo Cemetery
Aldo Rossi is an Italian Architect from Milan. This project is one of his most famous. It's a Cemetery in Modena that began in 1972 and to this day remains unfinished. The complex is basically two levels of semi-indoor halls covered floor to ceiling with people who have passed. Unlike the United States, every space is contains an image of the person that lies within. It is important to note that in this cemetery everyone is buried above ground. In contrast to the halls of the dead is the "folly" of the cemetery so to speak. This is an almost perfect cube that is solid with the exception of regularly placed square openings that hep create a unique and powerful environment when within this cube, the cube that holds those bodies which have been cremated.
