The Aquario di Genova was built in the historical port for the Expo ’92 which celebrated the 500-year anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the New World. The exterior of the Aquarium was designed and developed by Renzo Piano, who is from Genoa, while the interior was by American, Peter Chermayeff. The Aquarium opened to the public on October 15, 1993 and has more than 1,300,000 visitors each year. With dimensions of 10,000 square meters and 70 tanks, it is the largest aquarium in Europe and one of the most frequently visited cultural sites in Italy. I found the site to be very populated and lively on Sunday evening, when I visited the site.
