Palazzetto dello Sport

Palazzetto dello Sport

The Palazzetto dello sport is a concrete domed arena in Rome that was built for the purpose of housing the 1960 Olympic games. Designed by Pier Luigi Nervi in 1959 the structure utilizes cross-stitching concrete rib construction to achieve the incredible span. The lower half of the building is completely non-load bearing thanks to the concentric ring of support arms extending outward from the dome. This allows an uninterrupted clerestory of glass that allows light to flood into the arena. In turn, the building eschews lightness in both sense of the word that is seemingly inimitable even today.
