Milan's Piazza del Duomo

Milan's Piazza del Duomo is an impressive place surrounded by breathtaking architecture. The square gives access to both the Galleria Vittorio Emanuale and the world famous Duomo. Piazza del Duomo was renovated in the 19th century by Giuseppe Mengoni to harmonize the surrounding buildings with the mammoth cathedral. At the center of the piazza is a statue of Italian king Vittorio Emanuele II showing his victory at the Battle of St. Martin. Emanuele and his horse sit atop a high base flanked be marble lions. In addition to architecture and statuary one can expect to find numerous tourists and a multitude of pigeons in the area. Piazza del Duomo is easily accessed by the metro.
