Lake Como is a lake of glacial origin in the Lombardy region of Italy. It has an area of 146 square km, making it the third largest lake in Italy. At over 400m deep it is one of the deepest lakes in Europe, and the bottom of the lake is more than 200 m below sea-level.
The lake, well known for its natural beauty, is also a very popular vacation spot for celebrities and socialities from all over the world. Because of its proximity to the Fashion Capital of the World (Milan) and the beautiful resorts of Switzerland, many celebrities and their friends have chosen Lake Como (you may recall hearing about the cast of "Ocean's 12" staying at George Clooney's villa during filming breaks in Amsterdam).
For those not wanting to purchase their own villa on the lake, the Villa d'Este will be happy to provide you with a "home away from home" for your vacation. The Villa d'Este was built in 1568 by Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, a native of the town of Cernobbio. In 1816–17 the villa was home to Caroline of Brunswick, estranged wife of the Prince of Wales, and later in the century it was turned into a luxury hotel. Today the Villa d’Este is known for attracting such celebrity guests as Brangelina, Paul McCartney, Sharon Stone, Yves St. Laurent, Alfred Hitchcock, and various politicial leaders from all over the world.
