Arbeit Macht Frei

On the front entrance gates to Sachsenhausen is the infamous slogan Arbeit Macht Frei, meaning “Work makes you free.” About 200,000 people passed through those gates between 1936 and 1945. Not designed as a death camp, it was first used as a training center for SS officers. Then in the early years of the war the SS practiced methods of mass killing, testing on Russian POW’s. Prisoners would enter through Tower A (above) and many would leave through Station Z, the Crematorium.
