Hotspots

On our way to the NAI in Rotterdam, we passed through a large open public space with these huge mechanical spotlights. Even during the day, the bright red arms immediately grab your attention and hover over the large plaza defining the space. We learned that at night, the lights create various focus points with a spot light. Since they are operable to the public, they randomly change positions and redefine the social atmosphere. I loved the use of a medium such as light to completely change the social mood as opposed to the placement of a structure which remains static to activity throughout the day.
