An Acoustical Baptistery

Baptistery in Pisa
Pisa, Italy

While touring inside the baptistery we were kindly told “attenzione, silenzio per favore” and then moments later we heard quite the performance given to us by a vocalist. The sounds projected throughout the entire structure and reverberated off the walls giving a tingling sensation as you could hear the echoes. The acoustical performance gave much more satisfaction to the building’s integrity. Our tour guide explained that the Baptistery was the place to be for orchestra type events. Its interior use of columns and pillars brought luminosity to the dome and gave the effect of solemnity. The pulpit, one of the great masterworks of Romanesque sculpture, is decorated with relief panels depicting the nativity scene. If in Pisa, I suggest visiting this site and try to get a tour guide that will have a vocal performance demonstrated in the baptistery. Here is the link to a video of the performance we saw - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1h8-Bmhvd4
