I.M. Pei Pyramid, Louvre

Exterior shell

Pyramid interior space

connection detail

The Louvre itself is a spectacle of shear mass. However, the delicate series of pyramids designed by I.M Pei is a wonderful structural juxtapose to the classical Louvre. The addition to the Louvre Museum provides an exit and entrance, as well as circulation space. Completed in 1989, the pyramid contains 603 rhomboid shaped pieces of glass. The structural system shown above, elegantly achieves a grand space with out any column or vertical support.
