Silodam

After kilometers of peddling on our bikes we arrived at the IJ-river in Amsterdam to look the Silodam housing project by MVRDV. Utilizing the two existing dams, or docks, the design references the grain silos and stacked shipping containers in the harbor. The program consists of 157 apartments arranged in a 20m deep and 10 stores high structure. The units are organized in ‘little neighborhoods’ or groups of 4 to 8. Individuality is given to each of the neighborhoods by differing colors and materials. Seeing the details is well worth the trip to the Amsterdam as the structure’s x bracing is exposed on the interior and appears to become part of the programmed space. Silodam is a hard to miss building with its plethora of multi colors and materials.
