Piazza Maggiore in Bologna

Piazza di Maggiore is the main square in Bologna. The Piazza is home to The Fountain of Neptune and the city's civic buildings among other things. The fountain of Neptune is a classic meeting and gathering places for people of all ages. The church devoted to Saint Petronius is also along this town square. The people of Bologna love their patron saint and love this church. It is a symbol of their independence, albeit short, from papal authority. While designed to be the largest church in the world, once papal authority reasserted itself, the project was never fully realized. Although, even uncompleted, the church of Saint Petronius is still the 3rd largest Catholic church in the world.
